Action - the first step is to act on your small business idea. It doesn't matter if it's perfectly planned out, or you if you really understand your small business yet, taking an action step will get you moving from conception to inception. Here are some steps that lead to action!

Brainstorm - Take 30 minutes to completely brainstorm your small business. Write down everything you can think that deals with it and yes I mean write it down not type it. The action of writing is your first step.

Research Your Target Market - You have an idea now you need to know who your market is. If it's similar to another business visit it and see what type of customers come in. Research online for the demographics for your service or product.

Engage Friends on Your Business Idea - You can easily find out if your business idea is worthy by talking to your friends and no they don't have to be business experts. Try selling them on the idea and figure out where you small business idea is weak. Take notes.

Write a Business Plan - This is the strongest action step you can take. By writing a business plan you are forced to think through your business idea.

Identify & Engage Help - Your going to need help starting a small business so take the time to write out the various people that may be able to help you. Normally it's a lawyer, accountant, expert in the field and once you've done this ask for their help.

Engage the Competition - You can learn more about your small business from the competition than anywhere else. They've made the mistakes already so learn from them. Finally you may find businesses that aren't direct competition that may help you, you just have to ask.

Evaluate Your Idea - After taking the above steps or even in between evaluate if it's a good small business idea. If it is than start implementing the business plan and you'll be on your way to take a small business idea form inception to conception.
