Have Vinyl Floors or VCT? Has the finish dulled or have you just recently installed VCT? By stripping off existing wax or the thin factory finish and applying new wax, you can make your floors look brilliant and protect them from the use they'll get. This is the process we use at Green & Clean www.greencleanswfl.com

  • Step 1

Preparation: Lay out tarp and assemble all items outside area to be stripped and waxed. Tape off any carpeted transitions and cover carpet to avoid contaminatin. Plug in Wet Dry Vac and Low Speed machine in area behind where you start stripping to keep extension cord from laying in the stripper. Turn down air conditioner if possible to make area cooler.

  • Step 2

Dilute Hot water with stripper in strip bucket according to directions on stripper label. Beginning in area furthest from your exit door, "Flood" an area of floor approx 10' x 10': dip mop in stripper, then lift mop and let excess drain into bucket, then generously mop solution onto floor, dipping mop back in solution as needed. Let sit for aprox 5 minutes to allow solution to break down existing wax.

  • Step 3

Using Low Speed Machine with the stripping pad, scrub area using slow side to side movements. Be very careful as the floor will be extremely slippery. If wax buildup is obvious along walls, use stripping brush to remove buildup.

  • Step 4

Once you feel confident that old wax has been removed, use wet dry vac to remove all residue off of floor. Then repeat the process until all areas of floor are complete.

  • Step 5

Remove equipment from area, (wipe off residue from power cords, equipment), remove stripping pad and place in garbage bag. Remove from area.

  • Step 6

Using clean mop bucket, dilute cold water into neutral cleaner according to directions (usually 2-3 oz per gallon of water) Mop all of floor to nuetralize the stripper. This is very important as the new wax will not adhere to the tile properly if all of floor is not neutralized. Don't overapply neutral cleaner, do it as you would normally mop the floor. Use blowers to help dry quickly.

  • Step 7

Once floor has completely dried, pour wax into wax application bucket (usually a rectangular bucket large enough to dip your flat micro fiber mop head into) Again, beginning in area furthest from door, begin applying wax by dipping into bucket and using a back and forth sweeping motion, slightly overlapping on each stroke. Do not overapply, but make sure that wax is covering all flooring.

  • Step 8

Let dry completely, usually at least 45 minutes, but sometimes takes over an hour to dry. Repeat process for at least 3 coats. If more than 4 coats are going to be applied, we recommend that no more than 4 coats be done at one time. Let dry for at least 8 hours, then begin on coat #5. Usually we do no more than 6-7 coats maximum.(for floors that will be burnished on a regular basis.)

  • Step 9

Remove all equipment, being careful to dispose of all chemicals properly. Do not place any wax appicators or pads containing stipper on any other nearby surface (including concrete) as they will become stained. Let dry for a minimum of 6 hours before light use, 24 hours is recommended before heavy use and installation of furniture etc. Use of blowers will shorten time needed for drying.

  • Step 10

Variation: On newly installed VCT, there is a thin factory finish on the tile that is easily removed without the use of stripper. Use an aggressive cleaner such as Butcher's Hot Springs instead of stripper to remove the finish. Always wait at least 3 days after floors are installed before stripping and waxing new floors.
