Starting a kennel business is a lot like starting any other business, except this is a true labor of love. Many businesses may have a bottom line at the heart of its inception, but a kennel requires a love of animals and a commitment to caring of the animals around the clock everyday. Kennel owners not only are in the business just because they love animals, most find it to be a rewarding business where they are their own boss. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests you might also think about opening your own shelter.

Starting Up

  • Step 1

Look at other kennel, doggy day-care and shelters in the area. Talk to the owners to see what their experiences, good or bad, have been. It takes a fair amount of money to start a kennel; you will need capital. Decide if there's enough business in the town or city where you plan to start your business. Obtain a license for operating a shelter from your city hall.

  • Step 2

Assemble a good crew that has the passion and care you have for dogs to work with you. Get your people to help you find good deals on materials you need to start your business or shelter.

  • Step 3

Interview and take care to find a veterinarian. Many times dogs will get sick when they are not in their natural habitat. A nearby veterinarian will be helpful in these situations.

  • Step 4

Plan your shelter to have ample room for dogs to be housed and for exercise. Consider concrete flooring, as it is easier to clean. Also, make sure the material to separate the dogs are strong, so they can't get into each others space. Decide if it will be an enclosed or even indoor kennel or shelter. You can't keep dogs outside if there are blizzards or hurricanes.

  • Step 5

Start an advertising campaign. Use word of mouth, flyers, print media or any other types of advertising to make sure people know about your business. Social clubs, pet stores, veterinarians and online sources are good places to tout your kennel or shelter.
