  • Step 1

Consult restaurant refrigeration dealers in your area. View a range of units before deciding which is best for you. Ask about warranties covering parts and service for a used walk-in.

  • Step 2

Check restaurant equipment classified ads in your area. If possible, view a walk-in before it has been disassembled, because there is no way to know whether the condenser and compressor run well unless you see them in operation. Make sure the panels aren't rusty or dented. Ask how long the previous owner used the cooler, and whether they have service records for you to see. If the walk-in needs to be disassembled, negotiate with them over who will bear that cost.

  • Step 3

Call a licensed refrigeration technician and ask him to come evaluate the unit you are considering. Ask for an estimate for what it will cost to move that particular walk-in, and set it up at your own location. (Installation can sometimes cost more than the unit itself.)
