Personal credit is one way that a company decides your creditworthiness. By assessing your past payment history, a company can use that information to decide how risky it would be to extend credit to you. Business credit works the same way. If your personal credit is tarnished, this can be bad news for you. Although business credit is often built on personal credit, you can build business credit without relying on your negative credit history.

  • Step 1

Establish your business as a separate entity. Obtain a tax identification number instead of using your social security number. You can apply for this number on the Internal Revenue Service website.

Establish a separate telephone number. List it in the telephone directory so that it can be easily verified. You should have a separate business mailing address as well.

Open a separate business banking account. Take your tax identification number and any business licenses or incorporation paperwork to the bank when you apply for the account.

  • Step 2

Apply for trade credit with your suppliers. This is the easiest kind of credit to obtain so you should consider starting with this type of creditor. For example, office supply stores, like Staples, will offer small lines of business credit to newly opened small businesses.

  • Step 3

Pay your account balances on time or early for the next 6 months. As the credit reporting agencies report your accounts to be in good standing, your business credit will increase.

  • Step 4

Apply for business credit with retail stores, like Wal-Mart or Lowes, based on the business credit you established in Step 1. Do not overextend your credit. If you apply to numerous companies for credit at the same time, it can damage your business credit. Apply for no more than three to four credit lines every 6 months to be safe.

  • Step 5

Monitor your business credit. Order a copy of your business credit report every year from the major credit reporting agencies.
