Open the Internal Revenue Service's online EIN application in your web browser. Click the "Begin Application" button toward the bottom of the page to continue.

Indicate the type of EIN you need by selecting the legal structure of your business from the menu. You may choose from the broad categories of sole proprietor, partnerships, corporations, limited liability company (LLC), estate or trusts. If you need additional information for the business types, click on the name to read a description. If your legal structure is not listed, you may choose the last option to see more than 20 additional options. Click "Continue."

Specify the specific type of business you are applying for from the list. Though the broad category was indicated in the previous step, you must explain what the exact business type is on this page. Click "Continue" to confirm your choice, then click the "Continue" button again.

Select the reason that best describes why you are applying for an EIN. You must select a reason from the options given. Click "Continue."

Input your personal information, including your name and Social Security number. Select the appropriate option for your relationship to the company. Click "Continue."

Enter the physical address and phone number for the business. If the mailing address differs from the physical address, select the corresponding option and enter the desired mailing address.

Verify your address. The IRS automatically presents a database version of your address; you may select the database version or the version you submitted. Click the corresponding button to continue.

Provide the requested details about your business in the following pages. You must indicate what type of business will be conducted. After choosing your trade from the list, provide the additional details requested.

Select your preferred delivery method. You can receive your EIN confirmation letter by mail or in a PDF. Click "Continue."

Review your business information to ensure everything is correct. Click "Submit" if everything is correct, or edit your information as needed.

Write down your EIN and put it in a safe place. It will be displayed to you on the following page. You may view and print your confirmation letter from the link at the bottom of the page if you chose to receive your letter as a PDF.
