  • Step 1


    Apply for an EIN number by contacting the IRS office at 1-866-816-2065 or submitting the SS-4 form through the IRS website.





  • Step 2


    Submit an "Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code," Form 1023 with the applicable fees to the IRS within 15 months of your organization's creation. You may get request a 12-month extension if you need it.

    Attach a "Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative," Form 2848, if someone else is representing your company, as well as a "Tax Information Authorization," Form 8821, to allow the IRS to reveal the information to your representative.





  • Step 4


    Gain recognition by the IRS as a not-for-profit organization by being a corporation, trust or unincorporated association. You'll need to show that most of your activities further your tax-exemption status and that your organization fits exemption status as a charitable, educational or religious organization.





  • Step 5


    Wait until you're approved for tax-free status. The IRS may request additional information from you during the application process.





  • Step 6


    Apply for a tax-free number through your local state or government office by calling directly and requesting a form, applying in person or visiting its website.





  • Step 7


    Complete the tax-free number form and follow the instructions. You may be asked to submit a copy of your organization's bylaws, certificate of incorporation or registration, and financial history. Each state has its own requirements, so check with yours.





  • Step 8


    Mail the application and attachments to the address given on the application.
